Personal Philosophies project 2 final submission

For the second part of P7 I had to complete another project and develop it into a gallery piece. This time I was inspired by a series of handwritten letters that my nanny wrote to my family whilst she was living in Ghana with my granddad during the late 1990's. What I find interesting about them is the physicality of them, the fact that she took the time and effort to sit down and write to us and that it is something I have and can hold all these years later.

To try and communicate this I have photographed close ups of the letters to highlight the physical aspects of them that, in my opinion, makes them so special and presented them with photographs that family members have taken during trips to Ghana to show the difference in culture and the vast distance the letters travelled to get to us.

I spent a long time working out how to lay the images out on the wall but when it cam to the final crit we weren't able to put them up as the wall had just been painted for the degree show so in the end we just laid them out on the floor as if they were on the wall.

Personal Philosophies project 1 final submission

Well that's it now. My P7, Personal Philosophies, module was submitted last week and my second year at university is nearly over.

For this module I was required to produce two bodies of work, one which I developed into a gallery installation and the other into a portfolio piece.

In the end both pieces were inspired by two fabulous ladies from my life, my Nanna and Nanny.

This is the work I developed for my portfolio and is based on experiences I had with my Nanna before she passed away.

P7 letters project- Phase1 shoot 1

For my second shoot for my second project, I've gone back into the studio this time using a Hasselblad medium format camera with the Phase1 digital back that I was introduced to in a previous module and used to do a still life project (photographs from this assignment can be viewed here). This equipment has turned out to be pretty perfect for this project as it captures the image in incredible detail and with the use of and extension tube on the lens I'm able to photograph the letters close up without having to crop them further in post production.
